During warm summer nights
Once the sun said Goodbye
And the moon said Hello
The fireflies light their lanterns
To compete with the stars
With wide open eyes
And a jar in their hands
The hunt begins
It is time to run fast!
When the chasers get too close
Fireflies prompt each other
Flashing Morse code signals
That the race is getting tight
Children jump up and down
All across lawns and fields
Making insects lamps
Is more fun than you think
Shooting stars try to stop the chase
By distracting the children from their game
But the moon decides to play
So she hides behind a cloud
On a warm and dark summer night
Fireflies are all you see…
Magic is in the air
Catching fireflies with a jar
Is like grasping wishes as they pass
Holding the jar close to their heart
Children head back home
To sleep under the enchantment
Of their special magic lamps

"Catching fireflies with a jar
Is like grasping wishes as they pass" -- loved these lines!!!
Makes me long for summer again...this long, harsh winter will be my undoing. Strong, beautiful memory, with delightful images to take us back. Adorable photo, too!
Charming, theme-centric (summer, children) piece.

I remember those nights
A summer night of adjectives jump to my mind: delightful, enchanting, magical, childlike and innocent...wow. Loved it.
those eyes, those eyes, they see so much. beautiful.
You've captured the mgic of a warm summer childhood night so perfectly, Gabriela. Your words took me back, and I was running around the yard with my friends, clutching my jar with the holes carefully punched into the lid.
And what an enchanting picture!
Thank you for this...I got goosebumps! I love how the fireflies "compete with the stars."

Thank you for this gorgeous picture of a summer night, in the middle of the cold here! And the photograph is precious--those eyes!
Gabriela,
This does taste of such nights. I've never lived, but have only occasionally visited, places where fireflies are evident.
Muggy, have to be outdoors. Shooting stars, flickering insects.

How sweet. I've never caught fireflies, but you make it seem like a wonderful game. (I like the photo of that little girl. She's so cute.)
oh i would love to do this - but we don't have any over here in germany...so sad... very much enjoyed your poem gabriela
Thanks for a lovely poem, Gabriela! Took me back to a magical time when fireflies were as real as tiny fingers that tried to trap the light. Thanks for capturing those moments in words.
So whimsical and lovely!
The fireflies light their lantern to compete with the stars, loved that line
Beautiful scene your lines convey. Idyllic childhood feel to it. Very much enjoyed reading it. Cheers
Man I used to love chasing after fireflies when I was a kid...thank you for taking back to that space in time.
We saw fireflies in the countryside last weekend on our road trip. They are so delightful, and you've captured the innocence of chasing them beautifully.
